Todd Burchett Discusses Market Volatility in U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report, in an article examining the recent absence of market volatility, included commentary from Athena Capital Advisors’ Todd Burchett, a managing director of the portfolio management team. The article, “The Time to Prepare for Volatility Is When It’s Low,” was published on June 23.
Reporter Debbie Carlson explored the drivers behind the historically low volatility that characterizes the market environment today, and highlighted steps investors can take to protect their portfolios for the likelihood that market volatility will return.
Burchett, in speaking to Carlson, noted that the level of complacency evident in the market can be traced back to a high level of investor optimism. He added: "Take a look at your portfolio and stress test it against last January when the market was down 10 percent... Are you going to change your behavior when that happens?"
In addition, the article discussed potential actions investors may consider as a hedge against volatility, including call options against the major indexes, which can help limit losses in the event that markets deteriorate.
